PMI CIC Board of Directors
Formation of PMI-CIC Outreach
Nick Miller, PMP

Nick Miller is a certified PMP with Eli Lilly and Company. He serves as the Director of Outreach on the PMI CIC Board of Directors.

PMI-CIC Outreach has now been active for a little over a year. Although we haven’t accomplished everything we set out to, we have done some great things to get started down the right path.

Our initial work on Outreach has been the Ambassador program. This is a program that was created by Kevin Smith, PMP, as a way to introduce project management and PMI to an organization. It consists of a standard slide deck that can be used by a couple of PMI-CIC member to take to any organization who is interested. The slides were designed to be customized for the audience with at least 2 people from PMI-CIC present, one being a board member. We have information about it at our PMI-CIC booth that we’re now setting up at monthly meetings.

I’m also very pleased to announce that we will soon be awarding our first scholarship. Greg Becker, PMP, has established the scholarship program which is being administered through the PMI Education Foundation. The www.pmi.org/pmief website contains more about our scholarship. Our intent is to award the $1000 scholarship annually to a person who lives in the central Indiana area and is attending college full time. We hope to announce the first winner at the August or September meeting.

We’ve also been very active with Dr. Leslie Gardner from the University of Indianapolis who coordinated a conference on various supply chain topics (SupplyNet2006). The work leading up to the conference involved 6 professional organizations that are involved in aspects of supply chain management. PMI-CIC was well represented with Steve Vinson, PMP, presenting a paper on “A Project Management Success Story in Supply Chain” and I presented the PMP and CAPM certifications in a roundtable on professional certifications.

Building on that event, we have now signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the APICS organization. This MOU extends the partnership we’ve had in place with APICS over the last few years in conducting the annual PMI-APICS joint meetings. We’ll be investigating how we may be able to register some of their programs for PDUs and some of our programs for certification points towards the APICS certifications.

Going forward, we’ll need to build on these successes and continue with our mission to reach out to everyone involved in project management in the central Indiana area. We’ve conducted Ambassador program sessions at 3 companies and are looking for other opportunities for that. The SupplyNet conference and engagement of professional societies was very successful and Carole Miller, CAPM, will continue to coordinate our involvement.
